Rarely in our history has greater citizen involvement in political decisions been needed as it is today. Tensions between West and East regarding land grabbing, continuing nervousness about warfare in the Middle East, clear signs of global warming, from flooding, drought, wildfires, to high winds and melting ice caps, require the full attention and concern of every democratic voter, for all our sakes. And all this whilst we are exalted to go for economic growth.

TurnaroundUK welcomes this aim, as the way to improve all our lives. However, Robert Tyler believes the present government misunderstands the path to getting there: growth can only come from government trusting and empowering UK citizens to go for it. He presents an alternative, wide-ranging practical growth approach which prioritises equality of opportunity for all citizens, believing that government policy must reflect this growth strategy and purpose.

Tyler also sees our two-party voting system as a major impediment to genuine change. In the current ambience of distrust in the major parties and government in general, new parties emerge, such as Reform, disliking everything done previously: in other words, a protest party, attracting dissatisfied voters from left and right. However: protest is not a policy.

Robert Tyler is not proposing a new political party. He advocates the Single Transferable Voting system of Proportional Representation (PR) so the mix of opinions in parliament can better match the strength of their support in the country. He hopes Turnaround UK will promote readers not only to call for PR but also to contribute their own ideas for bringing about the growth we all need. And then, as the author says: “Leave the rest to us. It will be safe in our hands”.
